At Stratford upon Avon Primary School we follow Little Wandle when teaching phonics.
Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised has been developed by Wandle and Little Sutton English Hubs and taken forward by Little Sutton Primary School and Wandle Learning Trust in partnership with other phonics and early reading experts.
The complete SSP has been built around the update (Letters and Sounds improving rates of progress 2021) and draws on the latest research into how children learn best; how to ensure learning stays in children’s long term memory and how best to enable children to apply their learning to become highly competent readers.
You can follow the link below to find out more about the different phases and access resources to practice at home.
We complete Little Wandle assessmnet checkpoints half termly and deliver daily keep up sessions to address any gaps. At the end of Year One children complete Statutory phonic assessment.
When children start in Reception, they explore books and learn to enjoy them before reading. It is important that the children know specific phonemes before beginning to decode words. This builds their confidence.
Reading books are carefully matched with the children's secure phonics, using a matching grid from the Little Wandle scheme paired with Big Cat for Little Wandle reading books. The children also complete guided decoding, prosody and comprehension sessions every week in groups, as well as being heard to read individually.
